Day 2 and 3 / September 21st and 22nd

The second and third day of the seminar focus on group works. It is possible to apply for only one workgroup. The maximum number of participants per group is 10.
10:00 – 14:00 (21/09) Disaster Walk
We will present to our guests and local people examples of good practices of civic initiatives in three neighbourhoods – Trstenik, the centre and Kopilica. Disaster Walk is a traditional walk of the DegrowthCity team through the wilderness of Split reality and parts of the city outside the standard touristic walks.
15:00 – 19:00 (21/09) & 10:00 -12: 00 (22/09) Workgroup: Urban Policy Frameworks
We are witnessing the continuous irregular pressure of the city administration and / or the entrepreneur on the space in the city of Split, its appropriation and conversion into a touristic purpose or subject of the private interest. Under the leadership of Suzana Dobrić Žaja, this workgroup will provide citizens and the professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to react and defend the space and needs of the public in a due time and legal manner, and how to ensure public participation in urban planning in general.
Group moderator: Suzana Dobrić Žaja (Association of Architects Zagreb, Savica ZA Park initiative)
15:00 – 19:00 (21/09) & 10:00 -12: 00 (22/09) Workgroup: Active Citizenship
Communal mess, tourism and housing crisis are some of the city of Split problems about which local communities are actively engaged throughout several informal initiatives. The focus of this workgroup is to open the space for communication and connection between existing and new citizens’ initiatives and individuals as well as consideration of other activities – media campaigns, actions and demonstrations, networking, … as tools of defence.
Moderator: Dušica Radojčić (Green Istria, Community Center “Rojc”)
15:00 – 19:00 (21/09) & 10:00 -12: 00 (22/09) Workgroup: Ecology of public spaces
The subject of this workgroup is public space as an infrastructure for the development of civil liberties, self-organization, artistic activities and political pedagogy. Throughout the workgroup, we will be introduced to the good examples of public space interventions and ecology, that has emerged as a balance between the socio-economic and environmental aspects that such projects establish in local communities. Ecology as something that comes after a neglected, devastated and unused public space. The members of the workgroup will jointly design and realize the project of a small urban oasis in the area of the abandoned Koteks complex.
Moderator: Predrag Milić (ŠkoGrad)
19:00 – 23:59 (21/09) Paaaaarty!
We are going to have a blast with KLFM sound system and VJ collective Leilamarinaena!
12:00 – 14:00 (22/09) Final panel
The final panel will present the methods and results of the two-day work of the workgroups with action plans for future times. In this part, we will try to present a framework for urban Split in the 21st century, which starts from ’degrowth’ as a common experiment. The final panel is open to the general public regardless of participation in workgroups.
Our overall vision of “Minutes to disaster city 19” seminar is to kick off interchange of knowledge, experience and inspiration among all of those taking part in the seminar and to be a starting point of creating new civic actions, initiatives and (proto) institutions that are bases within environmental and social responsibility, cooperation, respecting the limits of nature and consensus about minimal conditions for good and affordable living in the city. We hope this weekend will be just an initial meeting point for the long winter collaborations of everyone involved from Split and beyond.
